Born in Liverpool Gary began his football with Burscough. He then joined Bolton Wanderers before making 159 appearances and scoring 42 goals whilst with Peterborough United, Notts County, Mansfield Town and Rotherham United, before returning to non-League with Telford United, Burscough and Vauxhall Motors.

In May 2003 Burscough reached the final of the FA Trophy against Tamworth. Having started the competition as 4001 outsiders they pulled off a shock 21 win, with Gary scoring both their goals.

Appointed Player-Manager of Formby in 2010 he later took on a coaching role with Prescot Cables before becoming number two at Vauxhall Motors in June 2011. He then assisted Carl at Marine last season.
