WHAT A SEASON!

With its successful culmination it’s only right and fair to acknowledge what Carl, Gary and all the team have achieved this season. So “Statto” has been at it cobbling together the facts, some of which you might have heard from my dulcet tones over the P.A. system.

Top of the pile has to be the ALL TIME RECORD of winning 31 League Matches, that eclipsed the 29 in 1948/49 and the 30 in our final Cheshire County League season of 1978/79.

15 of those wins were away from home that is also now an ALL TIME RECORD, beating by one the 2011/12 season.

7 away league victories on the bounce also now makes an ALL TIME RECORD.

We started the season, stretching until February 14th a home match record of 14 wins and 4 draws, that equalled our best ever record of 18 unbeaten home games. (That, of course, may well have been extended but for the fact of a glut of games and the need to play a virtual second team in the County Cup).

Just 1 home league loss equals the best ever by matching the 1948/49, 1960/61 and 1990/91 campaigns.

Over our thirty-five seasons of membership of the Northern Premier League our 16 home victories was just one short of the 2007/08 campaign whilst the 100 goals scored, also failed by one, to match the 2011/12 total.

By now winning the South Division, Witton Albion have become the first team to win both the North & South First Division play-offs, following on from their 2011/12 victory over Curzon Ashton.

In the F.A. Cup two wins including Buxton who were then top of the NPL Premier Division and beaten by Stalybridge Celtic, two leagues above us but only after the odd goal in an away replay was our best progress since season 2011/12

The F.A. Trophy saw the team achieve 4 wins that included defeating the then leaders, Brighouse of the Evo-Stik First Division South Division, Kettering Town from the Evo-Stik Southern Premier League and Boston United from the Conference North. Then played Chester from the Conference National in the First Round Proper and only succumbed, in very controversial circumstances, by the odd goal in an away replay. This being our best progress since season 2006/07

Whilst in the Cheshire Senior Cup 2 away wins, utilising players from the club’s Development & Youth Squads plus many fringe first team squad players, made it our best progress since season 2012/13.

Another somewhat offbeat but again a new club record was to have 5 different goalkeepers used in the five games played between January 28th and February 14th.

Brad Bauress (27) and Rob Hopley (26) sees the first time since 1989/90 (Mark Edwards & John Coleman) when we have two players scoring 20+ goals in a season.

Three players, Anthony Gardner, Matt Devine & Brad Bauress made the Division “Team of the Season” with Brad picking up the Young Player NPL Divisional Award, as well as being called up, from a Level 4 club, to the initial England “C” squad, also makes for very good club achievements.

All in all then not a “bad campaign” and as a great number of fans have also expressed, it has been a real pleasure to witness it!
